MESSAGES FROM CHAIRMAN OF CLAN DONNACHAIDH

For Branch Officers: Instructions for submitting subscriptions/membership dues to the Clan Membership Secretary in Scotland

Instructions for submitting subscriptions/membership dues to the
Clan Membership Secretary in Scotland

At the 2010 AGM, new procedures were adopted which should assist the Branch Treasurers in submitting collected Clan Society subscriptions/membership dues to Scotland.

  1. Annual subscriptions, or memberships, are due and payable on January 1 of each year.  The Membership Secretary is aware that many of the members in the clan branches choose to pay the dues at the highland games event which they attend during the year.  It was decided that a reasonable deadline should be placed on the date which the funds could be accepted in Scotland in order to facilitate a more efficient accounting system.  Therefore, while subscriptions are due on January 1, they will be accepted no later than July 31 at the Clan Centre to record membership for the current year.  Any funds received after July 31 will be considered membership for the following year.  If a member submits the dues after that date, but still wishes to receive a copy of the Clan Annual for the current year, then an additional £5 may be paid and the Clan Annual will be mailed.  It has been requested that at least one submission by each branch be received by the Clan Secretary prior to April 1 in order that the members’ names and addresses can be provided to the Clan Annual printer by the date deadline.

  1. Donations to the Clan Centre may be submitted and accepted at any time during the year.
  1. When the Branch Treasurer submits collected subscriptions, please follow these new guidelines:
  • For renewing members, please submit a written list which contains the name of the member, the membership number, the amount paid, and any changes to the member’s contact information, including an e-mail address if you have the member’s permission to disclose it.
  • For new members, please submit a written list which contains the name of the member, the amount paid, address, telephone number, e-mail address.
  • A new form has been created which should help both the Branch Treasurer and the Membership Secretary in recording the subscriptions and is provided on the next page.  Please take advantage of the form.

  1. When the subscriptions have been recorded in Scotland, the Membership Secretary will notify the Branch Treasurer via e-mail that the funds have been received and will include the new membership numbers.  As a safeguard, if the Branch Treasurer does not receive an acknowledgement from the Membership Secretary within two weeks of submission, then the Treasurer would be wise to send an e-mail of inquiry to the Membership Secretary.

Methods for submitting the subscriptions

  1. Send the written lists, along with a clan branch credit card authorization to the Clan Centre.

  1. Send the written lists, along with a clan branch cheque/check or certified bank check.  If using this method, please remember that the Society must pay bank fees and a conversion charge, so if possible, include an extra $10.
  1. Pay from the society website via PayPal, but remember to also e-mail the written list.  Individual members may also use the PayPal method.

  1. You may choose to Fax a subscription to 01796 483338, or 011 44 1796 483338 from the US, or call the Clan Centre with your card information at 011 44 1796 483338.

Youth Membership Program

The Donnachaidh Honorary Youth Membership program, implemented four years ago, has resulted in more than 611 enthusiastic young members to date.  Designed to educate children under the age of 21 about the role of Clan Donnachaidh in Scotland's history, the program is free.  Each new Clan Donnachaidh Honorary Youth Member receives a beautiful certificate, suitable for framing and signed by the Chief. The certificate design is actually borrowed from the original 1893 Clan Donnachaidh membership certificate.

The history of our great clan is a story worth telling and retelling, as was the custom under the old clan system. However, we live in a different, faster world today and if future generations are to hear the Donnachaidh story it will be our children and our grandchildren, the historians of tomorrow, who will tell them. We must teach those children today.

DNA Program

Undoubtedly the most important project created during the past few years is the Clan Donnachaidh DNA Surname Project. Everyone at some time or another has wondered about his or her origins, but until recently family history research relied on oral tradition and written records, both usually in short supply.  Now, however, the new and rapidly expanding science of genetic genealogy has created an explosion of Mitochondrial and Y-DNA testing.  The Clan Donnachaidh DNA project, administered by Family Tree DNA of Houston, Texas, presently numbers more than 500 participants, and many have identified other participants with whom they share a Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA).  The program includes an estimate, based on test results, of how many generations ago the MRCA probably lived. For more, open the DNA section of this site.

Journey Home Consultant

Description: judy.jpg
My name is Judy Hardin Harkin and I am very honored and pleased to be selected as the Journey Home Consultant for Clan Donnachaidh.

I’m sure that all of you dream of going to Scotland.  A highlight of such a journey would be attending an Annual General Meeting. And what an absolutely wonderful experience an AGM is!!!  Meeting the Chief and his family, getting to know fellow clansmen from around the world, all these become vivid memories that you will cherish the rest of your days.

But where do you start the planning process? What kind of lodging is available?  Where’s a good place to eat? What sites are “must dos”’? Can I get around using public transport or should I rent a car? Are there places off the beaten track that aren’t mentioned in the travel brochures but which will add to my understanding of our heritage? I have time to visit more than just the clan lands, what else should be on my list of places to see? And the list goes on….

Clan members who have attended AGMs will be helping me to answer these questions and more. We have all had the joy of being in Scotland and want to share the knowledge we’ve gained. Christy has brought back brochures from Pitlochry and other areas of interest in Perthshire.  There are a multitude of Internet sites that will prove helpful – and addictive!!!! As Journey Home Consultant I will share this wealth of information with the Branch leaders, and with you as individuals.

I’m not a travel agent -- I won’t be making reservations, etc. – I’m just someone who loves Scotland, the Clan, and who wants to help you make the most of your visit to this ancient and majestic land.

I was born and raised in Missouri, moving to New Bern, North Carolina in 1992. I am a Donnachaidh by marriage thanks to my husband Duncan. We have been members of the Clan Society in Scotland since 2000 and joined Donnachaidh of the Carolinas in 2002. I have served as Membership Chair/Secretary of the Carolinas branch for the past year. I find the history and culture of Scotland fascinating -- especially the part that Clan Donnachaidh has played. We as a clan have much to be proud of.

On Duncan’s and my first visit to Scotland, we chose a central location with the idea of taking day trips. We were surprised and delighted to find that we were staying in the heart of clan country!!! What a memorable week we had. Three more trips to Scotland followed, two of them planned around the date of the clan’s AGM. Perthshire is absolutely beautiful, and no matter where else we visit while in Scotland, our hearts always draw us back to clan country.

As the Journey Home Consultant, I look forward to helping YOU discover this ancient and wondrous land.
Best Regards,
Judy Harkin < journeyhometoscotland@yahoo.com >

Commissioning of the tartan:

A professional dressmaker comments that, although a small sett looks attractive close up, from a distance it can create a very ‘busy’ effect; it tends to look more like a check and so less Scottish; and it can look more like a children’s pattern.

The sett for the new polycotton for Modern Robertson Hunting tartan has been received in three sizes, printed on card with samples of the cotton attached.

The colours in the scans provided are not a perfect match with the real colours
A scan has been made of each sample and an electronic copy has been requested from the manufacturer. Unfortunately
none of these fully reflects the vivid colours of the card copy and cotton samples. It appears the manufacturer usually checks tartan colours against recommended sources.

The pdf scans are too light. The GIF images sent by the manufacturer, which are the right size when viewed at 150% in Microsoft
photo manager, are also too light and do not reflect the right quality of colour when viewed on screen. A better result may be obtained by printing.

It has not been able to adjust the scan colours to match the card and cotton samples. The green is a deep emerald and
has a quality not reflected in the scan on screen. The blue is a deep marine blue, and the red is scarlet. The colours are not the muted colours of the ancient Robertson Hunting tartan. They look more like colours sometimes seen in silk.
