Our Chairman has asked that members be informed of the death a few weeks ago, after a long illness, of Sir Alexander "Sandy" Reid, Bt., our Honorary President for many years, and before that himself Chairman of the Society. Because of illness he had for some years now not been actively involved in the Society's affairs.
Lady Reid has replied in very appreciative terms to the condolences offered by the Chairman on behalf of the Society. She has also confirmed that, at his own wish, there will be no memorial service or other opportunity for the Clan to be represented formally at any celebration of Sandy's life. In writing of how much the Clan meant to him, and of how proud he was to have been our Hon. President, she explains that, in her own words, "Sandy wanted a very simple departure."
Of the many Reid clansmen and clanswomen who have graced and still grace the Society, Sandy, following in the footsteps of his father Sir Edward before him did more than most for the Society, as well as achieving other distinctions in public life. His death came at a moment when our 2019 Clan Annual was already in its final stages. (It is now in printing and will be on its way to members in the coming few weeks.) For this reason, a proper appreciation of the late Sir Sandy's life and his family's relationship with the Society will appear only in next year's Annual.
The Clan Council will be looking in due course to invite another distinguished Clansman or Clanswoman to accept the role of Honorary President and will make the relevant announcement as soon as the position has been filled.
